Cyprus is popular as a beach destination, but they have more to offer than stunning beaches and clear blue waters. The country has a number of archaeological and antiquities sites, each having artifacts and buildings that back to the Roman Empire and even the New Stone Age. The capital Nicosia is famous for its Venetian walls. In and around the city are great bars and restaurants. Food in Cyprus is a mix of Mediterranean cuisine from both Turkey and Greece. When you visit Cyprus, you should also come to the Troodos Mountains. The mountains in this area reach as high as 3,000 meters – around them are walking trails that become ski paths during winter time. Also, one of the better known places in Cyprus is the Turkish bath called Hamam Omerye. What makes this hammam unique is that the building and structure has been around since the 14th century.

Most Cyprus accommodations are found near the beach - waterfront resorts, beach hotels, beach resorts, and the like. Even hostels are the same way. All of them are found near the beach, either farther down into the city centers or just right at the back of the more expensive hotels. They are also located near the public beaches – truly for the low-cost traveler. Although in international standards these hostels are pretty pricey, they are still cheaper than the luxury hotels – and yet they offer almost the same value. Rooms may be fanned or air-conditioned. Rarely do you see dormitory types that rent only bed space. Most are exactly like hotels – they are en suite and come in single, double, twin and family occupancies. They lack most of the water activities found in the more expensive hotels, but most have their own swimming pool. Others serve daily breakfast (some even for free like a true bed & breakfast), and almost all are willing to grill a dish or two.

A hostel can be booked for a much shorter stay like holidays lets or weekend stays. Compared to hotels that require 6 or 7 days minimum stay during the summer or spring season, hostels limit theirs to 3 days (although some would go as far as 5 days minimum). It’s good that they have hostels in Cyprus, as the hotels can be really expensive. It’s a great alternative that’s still mostly located near the beach.
